San Francisco Bay Area Modern Family Photographer : Hip, Happy Holiday Sessions are a Wrap!

Huge sigh!  The holiday portrait session for 2011 is officially a wrap – but what great sessions they were!  I have been shooting and editing sessions for six weeks straight and finally have a chance to come up for air and post one example of a modern, hip, happy holiday session from this year.  There were many to choose from – but this one with three sisters (two are twins), two parents and a somewhat irreverent dog named Kono -  seemed to sum up my 2011 family photo sessions. Embodying great light, bold colors, fun subjects, a little bit of snow and a modern twist on family portraits – here is a taste of our session,  all shot in a 30 minute holiday mini session under the freeway in Oakland :)

Bay Area Modern Family Photographer : Get on the Calendar for Fall Family Portraits

Sadly, summer is coming to an end, but fret not- there’s photography to look forward to this fall!
Now is a great time to book your autumn and holiday photo shoots while there are still spaces open on the calender.  September and early October are a particularly great time for outdoor pictures in the Bay Area as temperatures are pleasant and rain is rare.  And while the holidays might not be on your mind yet, we do recommend that portraits for holiday cards and gifts be taken by mid-October to give us plenty of time to create truly unique custom design holiday cards and portrait gifts as the late fall can get very busy around here!

Beautiful Bay Area fall photo shoots make for great holiday portraits.  To give you a glimpse at how fun fall portraits can be, here is a slideshow of a custom design album capturing rambunctious, young Henry at his one-year-old fall photo shoot in Oakland Joaquin Miller Park.  This is a great location for interactive, playful shots documenting the 12 month milestone for Henry while also focusing on the relationships of Henry with his parents. The Oakland Hills provide a great backdrop for family portraits, especially with the crisp natural light and fall foliage that is starting to turn into brilliant colors.

San Francisco Children’s Photographer : Fun Family Portaits with a 5 year old in the Marina

Now that we are at the end of summer in the Bay Area, it is a *fantastic* time for outdoor location portrait sessions. We generally have the best weather of the entire year in the months of September and October.  Lifestyle family portraits on location in the Bay Area is a great adventure -  as evidenced at this session below of 5 year old Sarah and her energetic parents at the Marina district in San Francisco.

We started off the session at the Palace of Fine Arts where Sarah had fun playing make-believe, jumping around, weaving in and out of the stunning columns that make up the palace and hanging out with her mom and dad. I usually bring some fun things for kids to do at the shoot  – as here where I brought along paper umbrellas, various colorful flowers in season, bubbles and ribbon wands to spark Sarah’s imagination.

During weekday mornings, the Palace of Fine Arts is a great spot for playful family portraits because there is plenty of room for kids to roam around.

We continued the adventure at nearby Chrissy Fields. Though it seems like the foggy mornings typical to San Francisco might pose a threat to beach photography, they actually make for very lovely natural light.

The fog also kept the beach empty enough for Sarah to run around and play and show us her interesting, multifaceted personality.

Creative, fun action shots, as well as relaxed portraiture were all achieved.

That’s a wrap!

Twin Toddler & Family Portraits in San Francisco Golden Gate Park

Boy how time flies!  It seems like no time had passed since I was photographing this dynamic duo in my studio as 7 month olds – but now they were 16 month old active walking, talking toddlers – and an on location family portrait session in San Francisco Golden Gate Park was definitely the ticket for these twin girls and their parents.   Outdoor child photography is a great alternative to studio photography for toddlers and young children because the great outdoors provides a larger space for these little ones to roam and be their curious, fun-loving selves.

This family was looking for fine art child photography that was artistic and captured their toddler’s personalities in a way that was authentic and memorable.  The result of sessions like these are often best translated into a few key wall portraits along with a custom designed book to weave together the bulk of the images to truly portray the subjects and their relationships.  The parents supplied text for the book detailing the girls at this age in a way that is sure to be treasured for generations to come.

Golden Gate Park is an amazing location for artistic, natural light family portraits. This classic San Francisco spot is one of my favorites for toddlers allowing me to  capture a wide variety of looks within a relatively compact area. Thus the whole session take about an hour – including clothing changes and a few snack breaks along the way ;)  We kicked things off at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers to get some family pictures and portraits of the twins just playing with each other. We also went to a giant fern garden in GG Park for some shots of the fraternal twins interacting in the grass and hanging out in rustic looking garden chairs that we brought for the set. Bubbles, balls and flowers all provided great props for toddler photography, and allowed the twins to have a fun time while being photographed. We wrapped up the day against the backdrop of majestic pillars, iron gates and ivy-covered walls at one of my secret spots in Golden Gate Park. Classic yet contemporary family portraits will always be in vogue!  Here are layouts from the resulting coffee table album…

Bay Area Unique Teen Photographer : Urban Graduation Portraits

Spring and early June is a great time for graduation portraits to highlight a milestone with contemporary, fun portraits. And in my book, graduating from middle school counts as class of 2011 too!  So just in time to celebrate this achievement, Natalie did some modern urban teen portraits in the east bay.  The Bay Area has awesome locations for urban adventure photo shoots – with lots of color and textures to use as backgrounds. Fortunately there are many of these cool portrait locations within minutes of my Alameda Studio.

One of the things I enjoyed about this session is that Natalie had her Mom Susan  in lots of the photos with her.  So not only did we get unique, edgy graduation portraits – we also got some fun family portraits.  Natalie had several outfits with her and Susan brought complementary outfits – so we were able to put together ensembles that were unique to each person but still looked good when they were next to each other in the photos. Here are some favorites from the session that they picked out for one of our new products at the studio that has been very popular – the modern wall collage. The final modern wall collage is shown at the end.

And here is the modern wall collage that they ordered for their home using their favorite images above… this collage hangs on aluminum pegs 1 inch off of the wall for a very contemporary clean look! It is a cinch to put up and to change out pics over the year. A great choice for modern portraiture!
